CERMICS (mathematics and scientific calculus teaching and research Centre)

CERMICS’s activity covers several fields in applied mathematics, in particular scientific calculus, applied probability, modelling and digital simulation, and optimisation.

A team structure

It is organised into five teams. Three of them work on modelling and scientific calculus:

  • the “Fluid Mechanics” team (leader A. Ern) develops advanced methods of finite element modelling applied mainly to environmental flows and mechanical engineering;
  • the “Molecular and multi-scale simulations” team (leader T. Lelièvre) works on a range of connected fields, from the calculus of electronic structures to the multiscale simulation of materials to statistical physics,
  • the “PDE and materials” team (leader R. Monneau) works on crystal-scale mathematical material models..

Two other teams cover important fields in applied maths:

  • the “Optimisation and Systems” team (leader M. de Lara) works on modelling, essentially stochastic, and on control,
  • the “Applied Probability” team (leader B. Jourdain) works on numerical methods and models based on probability theory.

It should be noted that two teams include joint INRIA project teams (EPI Micmac and Mathfi from CRI Rocquencourt, respectively under the scientific oversight of C. Le Bris and A. Sulem).
