CO2 capture, transport and storage

In partnership with Air Liquide, EDF, GDF Suez, Lafarge, Le Havre Municipality and District, Grand Port du Havre, Total, École des Ponts Paris Tech, Mines ParisTech, Le Havre University, BRGM and the FI3M Foundation

Establishment of the Chair

June 2009

Coordinators for École des Ponts Paris Tech:

Minh HA DUONG (CIRED) et Jean-Michel Pereira (NAVIER)

Chair Holder:

Denis CLODIC (Mines ParisTech)

Objectives:

The Chair’s objective is to promote the emergence of effective technologies for limiting CO2 emissions by developing our knowledge of carbon capture and storage (CCS). This role encompasses multiple R&D activities by member companies, local authorities and research institutes. The multiannual research programme seeks to deepen our understanding of the physical phenomena associated with CO2 storage in reservoirs, to analyse the techno-economic conditions underlying the development of the first CCS pilot and demonstration projects, to analyse and manage the risks associated with the CCS process, to understand and enhance the conditions for the territorial and social implementation of CCS by analysing the experiments underway in France, Europe and the rest of the world. The research explores all the links in the chain:capture, transport and storage, together with their environmental, economic, industrial and social impact.

Themes:

The Chair oversees teaching and research in the following areas:

  • Carbon capture and methods of minimising the energy used in carbon separation;
  • CO2 transport networks and management pooling;
  • Long-term storage;
  • Carbon capture, transport and storage and its industrial, territorial and social application in the Le Havre region;
  • Risk management;
  • Carbon capture, transport and storage and the carbon economy.
