Masters in Ocean, Atmosphere, Climate and Space Observations (OACOS)

Background

Current climatic conditions have created a need in companies and research institutions for climate and environment experts. In response to this situation, the specialty in Ocean, Atmosphere, Climate and Spatial Observations, jointly accredited by École des Ponts ParisTech, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, École Normale Supérieure, École Polytechnique, and ENSTA ParisTech, is the benchmark program in the Paris region focusing on the understanding of climate and climate change, physical oceanography, atmospheric mechanisms, and methods of observation from space.

Objectives

Aimed at students with a good grounding in applied physics and mathematics, the purpose of this Masters 2 program is to present dynamic, physical, and chemical processes in the atmosphere and in the ocean, and problems associated with the total climate system. This knowledge is used to tackle climate modelling and forecasting. The methods of observing these environments are further explored, in particular spaceborne remote sensing techniques.

Benefits

The Masters teaching staff are leading researchers and academics. Some have contributed or continue to contribute to the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change), winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Alongside Université Pierre et Marie Curie, École Normale Supérieure, the ParisTech schools (École Polytechnique, ENSTA ParisTech, École des Ponts ParisTech) make a very significant contribution to the program.

Career Opportunities

Students emerging from this program may be taken on in public (Météo‐France, Ifremer, etc.) or private research, in companies in the aerospace sector (CNES, ESA, etc.), and in large companies (automotive industry, banking, insurance, energy, …), or public or private institutions wishing to employ people specializing in the global environment and climate risk.
